Jens Ewald

Jens is an OpenDoTT and Mozilla fellow currently pursuing a joint PhD at The University of Dundee and Mozilla Foundation. His research focuses on the relationship of the self and connected wearable objects to explore alternative narratives for a healthy, open, and trustworthy Internet of Things reflecting on a decentralised human future.Before joining OpenDoTT, Jens has worked as an independent developer in the arts and design and a long term faculty Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design (Kiel DE) exploring digital matter(s) with art and design students. With a background in philosophy and design, his interest in programming languages, computational machineries and the relationship of coded systems to art and design practice has led to a diverse involvement in many disciplines. He graduated with a diploma in communication design from Muthesius specialising in digital media / intermedia with a study on experimental structural film through code. His love of sharing knowledge led to teaching workshops on physical computing and creative programming as a visiting lecturer in Germany and India, and facilitating workshops at media art festivals in Europe. His continuous involvement within the arts as part of the internationally performing and exhibiting sound art collective Staalplaat Soundsystem looks back on an over a decade of exploration in hardware and software for sound art installations in various environments. He has helped to turn train stations in the Hague, auto rickshaws in New Delhi, cars in Berlin, trees in Belgium, and various everyday objects into poetic sound structures.
